Planning your loft conversion

What to consider when planning your loft conversion

Deciding to embark on a loft conversion is a big commitment, not just financially but also for your home and family. There are a lot of factors to consider before making your decision. We’ve put together a list of things to think about when planning your loft conversion in order to make your decision a little bit easier!

Check that your loft is suitable for a conversion

Before you start planning your loft conversion, you need to check that it is possible, and also affordable. You should consider factors such as roof type, dormer type, head height and bespoke storage. All of these are items which affect the costing.

Head height can often be limited within lofts. There are many things which can be done in order to achieve the head height required in order to comply with building regulations. Lowering ceilings is one option.

Not sure if a loft conversion isn’t possible due to limited head height or any other factors? Book a complimentary consultation with Altitude Lofts and we will assess your loft space and provide you with a quotation helping you to determine whether conversion is feasible or not.

Plan how you will use the space

One of the key parts of planning your loft conversion is deciding how you will use the space so that a design can be created, and you can start to work out costings for furniture, fittings, and so on.

Whether you need another bedroom in your house because you’ve just had a baby (congratulations!), or because an older relative is moving in, a loft conversion can definitely help you accommodate that extra person. Maybe your family are forever fighting over the bathroom... It’s common for people to add an ensuite bathroom to their loft conversion to help overcome this and of course, increase the value of their home!

It is really important not to cram too many bedrooms/ bathrooms into a space which is not suitable. Our design consultants and architect will guide you through this and provide you with expert advice every step of the way.

Consider the impact on the floor below

Many people don’t realise beforehand, but stairs are a major design consideration when embarking on a loft conversion. We ensure that we do everything we can to avoid you losing a room on the first floor in order to gain a room within the loft.

There is a certain balance that should be achieved, where your staircase is wide enough to accommodate furniture being brought up into the loft, whilst being in a location that doesn’t encroach on the downstairs space too much and that the new staircase complies with building regulations.

Choose your loft type

Two of the most common loft conversions that we undertake at Altitude Lofts are rear dormers and hip to gable rear dormers. These types of conversions can completely transform your loft as they provide a huge amount of additional floor space and head height.

We undertake many different types of loft conversions; the type is dependent on the style of property etc. You can find more information about the different options we provide on our Loft Types page.

To summarise, when planning your loft conversion, you should first ensure that your loft is suitable for conversion, plan how you will use the space, consider the impact on the floor below, and finally choose the loft type that is right for you.

Here at Altitude Lofts, our team are experienced in all aspects of loft conversions, so please do not hesitate to get in touch and we would be more than happy to help with any queries you may have!
